Every insulation has their advantages in different applications, not one type will suit all projects. However, spray foam outperforms traditional insulation batts on several aspects.
- Higher thermal insulation performance (R-Value) meaning a cozier home. R-value is also impacted by air-leakage, which is lower in closed cell spray insulation Vs traditional fibreglass batts as it forms an airtight barrier.
- Unlike batts that can be susceptible to moisture damage, close cell spray insulation can act as a moisture barrier, preventing mould and timber rot.
- Traditional batts need physical fixing into place. Over time the insulation can sag and fall requiring replacing. Spray foam adheres to the underfloor surface and has a long (usually >50year) lifespan.
- Traditional batts are favourable nesting environments for rodents and pests. Spray foam insulation is difficult for rodents to gnaw, acting as a deterent.
- As SPF is applied by spraying, it can conform to the shape of the substrate, allowing insulation of complex areas and as it is light weight, it has little design impact on existing structural elements. Spray foam is ideal for intricate elements in architectural homes.
Closed/open cell refers to the density of the spray foam product.
Closed cell spray foam is denser, harder, has a higher R-value and moisture resistance. It expands less and is ideal for small spaces.
Open cell spray insulation has cheaper, lighter, quicker to apply and expands more. However, it does have poorer thermal insulation qualities.

Spray foam insulation does give off fumes during the installation process known as 'off-gassing'. We recommend that householders and pets are not in the home while it is being sprayed and for 12-24hours afterwards. Following this the home is safe to live in.
